Alchera for the Mac

During winter 2000 /2001 requests for a Mac edition of Alchera gradually became a frequently asked question. The short answer is that a Mac edition will be considered earliest in 2002.

Whether and when a Mac edition will be released, depends on various conditions. Here's the long answer.

First of all, Alchera is still an evolving product. While Alchera is appreciated by many users for the many ways in which it aids dreamwork, it still isn't quite there yet. This is also why registered users have been getting free upgrades ever since the first version. The next major version will be version 4.0, which is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2001. It is too early to tell how well it will succeed in bringing all the benefits dream software should be able to provide. It is however expected to be another big step forwards.

Second, the Windows edition needs to become a significant commercial success. The Mac market is much smaller, so as long as the Windows edition isn't a showing significant revenue, a Mac edition is guaranteed to make a loss.

Third, Alchera is developed with Delphi. Applications created with Delphi can easily be ported to Linux, but not yet to the Mac. There is some speculation about a possible Delphi for the Mac. That would make things much easier. Without a Delphi for the Mac, porting Alchera will require much and much more work.

Alchera for the Mac mailing list

As a service to interested Mac users, a mailing will be sent as soon as there's more known about a Mac edition. Don't expect to hear anything soon though.
